Experience
I teach in the University of Michigan's English Department Writing Program. I've taught courses in nonfiction lyric and narrative writing, academic writing, composition, literature, poetry, and prose. I have taught, with joy and success, English 125 (Writing and Academic Inquiry) and English 223 (Creative Writing), and English 124 (Literature). I am a Fiction Editor for The Offing, which is a branch of Los Angeles Review of Books. Prior to my position as Graduate Student Instructor in the University of Michigan, I earned a Masters of Arts degree in Education, with an emphasis in English Literature and Writing from Prescott College. I also worked as a full-time classroom teacher in Tucson, Arizona for five years, teaching high school, middle school, and elementary school students. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from Claremont McKenna College, where I was employed as a tutor in the Center for Writing and Public Discourse. At the Center for Writing and Public Discourse I worked one-on-one with students to generate writing topics, organize and cohere their writing, and to effectively revise. I am also very interested in language education in the community: I have taught public writing workshops and worked as a tutor to adult and youth English Language Learners at 826 Valencia. Most recently, I have worked as a private writing tutor to a young professional applying to Medical School, to middle-school aged children, to medical professionals, and to business people. Many of my students speak English as a second language, and many are proficient in English, but seeking greater facility in their professional writing.
