Education

I have a Master's Degree in Teaching and Curriculum from Michigan State University and a double-major in English and Spanish from Western Michigan University. I have also accumulated 30 additional hours of graduate credit and attended several workshops, particularly writing conferences. I have attended the University of Iowa writing conference twice and am currently at work on a manuscript in which an editor is interested. I specialize in language, writing, linguistics, culture,essay editing, literature and mostly developing an appreciation and passion for life-long learning.

Experience

I tutor adults as well as students. I am currently helping a professor from Switzerland prepare his book for publication. English writing is my specialty, not just the mechanics, but ensuring that the meaning, especially for people for whom English is a second language, comes through with clarity and that nothing is lost in translation. I edit manuscripts, teach ESOL and Spanish. I taught high school for 30 years, and although I do miss it, I have found that being able to work one-on-one with individuals is extremely rewarding. For younger students I develop individualized learning plans which include Howard Gardner's "Multiple Intelligences" and incorporate emotional intelligence as well to create an holistic learning experience; this includes real-world connections, personal experiences and perspectives which are key to an organic learning experience. I also believe that the natural personal relationship that develops between the tutor, the client, and the parents (if applicable) enhances the experience; the atmosphere of trust creates a tone in which students feel comfortable and inspired.

Hobbies

My students generally described me as "tough but cool" and many of them still keep in touch. I believe academic rigor should be paired with humor and insight to foster deep learning. I model pride in excellence in my teaching and my students learn to take great pride in their own excellence in performing. My style is dynamic, energetic and passionate while remaining relaxing and providing a safe place in which to question, explore and learn. I have two daughters in their 20's who keep me in connected with young people and recently worked with college students at U of M. We always have fun; I am very current in youth culture and basically still young at heart so it's easy to relate. I think laughter and fun is an integral part in the learning process. My interests include reading, writing, traveling, the natural world, my dog, skiing, swimming, laughing...and always learning.
