Education

I am currently a Senior double majoring in Classical Archaeology with Honors and Anthropology at the University of Michigan with a 3.8 GPA. I am pursuing a Master's in Teaching in Elementary Education with Concentrations in Language Arts and Social Studies after graduation.

Experience

When I was in high school I ran and volunteered at our after-school tutor center. I helped high school students, including students with learning difficulties, with their homework and prepared them for upcoming tests in English, Social Studies, and Pre-Algebra courses. I also volunteered twice a week tutoring middle schoolers who were falling behind in their courses. Now, after these tutoring experiences, as well as multiple years of experience as a nanny, I have made the wonderful discovery that I want to become a teacher for upper elementary and middle school students. I will be applying to Master's in Teaching Programs at the end of this semester, and I am currently working on courses for concentrations in Language Arts and Social Studies for Middle Aged (grades 4-9) students. I believe that my experience as a nanny has given me a unique and valuable insight into the goals, experiences, and activities that engage and motivate children to learn and grow. For instance, this past summer, I developed a reading and writing program for an eight-year-old girl that I had the great privilege of caring for and who was struggling in Language Arts. I worked with her parents to get her her first library card and she took out as many books as she could each week! I gave her a diary in which she recounted all of her summer adventures each day, and I always had a craft or activity that involved writing. For instance, when we went to the zoo, she created a "Zoo Book" full of pictures of the animals she visited and captions for each animal describing all that she learned from the trip and the library. She also began to read each day for thirty minutes, sometimes alone, sometimes out-loud to me, and sometimes as a goodnight story to her younger siblings before their naps. For a four-year-old boy I cared for, I created a game that motivated him to persevere through his alphabet flash cards. When he got five letters correct he received a "pokemon candy" (which we created out of paper) that would level him up according to the number on the candy. It was hard to get him to start playing! We played many other learning games as well, including ones that got him outdoors, like alphabet twister with a mat I made with sidewalk chalk, and hide-and-seek to work on his numbers up to 100. As you can see, I love working with children of all ages to achieve their learning goals by creating fun, inventive activities. I also have experience integrating these activities into childcare and involving multiple age groups when necessary. Because of my nanny experience, I have certifications in First Aid and CPR, as well as in Advanced Childcare. I would love to work with you and your child's teacher to help them achieve all that they can this school year. I am familiar with the common core requirements, and have the motivation to teach your child just as much as they'll teach me during our time together. I provide parents lesson plans before every session and a "What We Did Today" form after each session. I keep all of this information as well as the work that was completed by the student in a binder that the student transports back-and-forth between the session and your home. I also provide the student with a diary with fun daily writing prompts that I create with your child's interests in mind. To make the best possible lesson plans for your student, I ask for a copy of your student's school calendar that covers lesson plans (when a teacher provides one), any previous work from your student you can offer me to look over and return, and a completed questionnaire that I have created for parents and students about academic goals, confidence levels, strong and weak subjects, learning styles, etc.

Hobbies

As a Classical Archaeology major, I have been able to travel the world on archaeological excavations. So far, I have travelled to Greece, working on an Ancient Sanctuary Site on an island, as well as to Hungary, working on a Bronze Age Burial Site. These experiences have given me a deep love for travel, an interest in global politics, and a great appreciation for diversity. I now love creating and trying new dishes from around the world and learning new languages. Currently I am working on Spanish, German, French, Italian, Hungarian, American Sign Language, Modern Greek, Ancient Greek, and Latin. My work in Archaeology has also increased my skills and passion for writing and reading. I have presented research at many conferences, started work on an honors thesis, and completed many large research papers, as required in academic fields in the humanities and social sciences. I love the outdoors whether its digging in another country or gardening at home. I even love taking "backcountry" trips in the United States, backpacking and camping along the way. My last trip was to Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula. But I also love indoor activities, especially crafting. I love crocheting, sewing, scrapbooking, making cards, and embroidering. I also love reading at the library and visiting used book stores.
